Breast Feeding

Confused- got period still breastfeeding

06/20/2006

Question:

Hello. I`ve always heard that you don`t get your period when breastfeeding. I breastfeed my first son and did not get my period until I stopped breastfeeding. My second son is now 6 months, I am still breastfeeding and I just got my period (I think), light spotting...if it is my period, is this normal? Thank you.

Answer:

It is not abnormal to get your period prior to weaning your child. Since you child is six months old you are most likely beginning to introduce solid foods to him, and the less time the baby spends at the breast the more likely you are to get a menstrual period. It is very important to remember that while you are breast feeding you can become pregnant, so unless you are planning on becoming pregnant you may want to consider contraception
