Addicted baby (marijuana)

06/20/2006

Question:

Do unborn babys get addicted to marijuana.

Answer:

They will get, through the mother's blood, anything that she takes into her body.  That being said, if the mother is addicted to any substance, the baby will be exposed to that drug too.  Once the baby is no longer inside the mother, it no longer has access to mom's blood and no longer has access to mom's drugs so the baby tends to go into withdrawal which is one sign of addiction.

It goes without saying, the baby should not be exposed to drugs, either before or after birth and everything that can be done to help the mother stop her addiction should be made available.
