Asthma

Side Effects of Advair

08/28/2006

Question:

What are the side effects of advair?

Answer:

Advair is a combination of two drugs. One is a topical steroid and if used properly will not cause serious systemic side effects. In children it was once postulated that this could retard growth but controlled studies have shown that this is not the case. The other drug is a bronchial smooth muscle dilator. Prospective studies have shown that about 16% of African Americans can have an opposite reaction in that the smooth muscle tightens up rather than relaxes. Both doctors and patients have to be aware of this adverse effect because the consequences can be serious. However, Caucasian patients do not appear to be at similar risk. The possible side effects of the second drug do not lessen the good effects of the first drug.
