Testing for the Sickle Cell Trait09/13/2006 |
How can I know if I have the gene for sickle cell disease?
There is a simple blood test called a hemoglobin electropheresis that can be performed. It will tell you if you have sickle trait which means that you are a "carrier" and have one gene for sickle cell that can be passed down to your children. I would recommend asking your doctor about it and he/she can potentially order the test for you.
