Pethidine Use in the United States09/28/2006 |
I am from Barbados, although I now live in the United States. A common drug used to treat the sickle cell crisis in Barbados is Pethidine, but I didn`t see it listed in the article on treatments. Is this drug used in the United States? If not, what is the equivalent that is approved for use?
Pethidine is another name for Demerol or meperdine which is a narcotic (opioid) pain medicine very similar to morphine. It is not used as much in the US anymore because it can cause seizures as a side effect.
