Sickle Cell Anemia

Pethidine Use in the United States

09/28/2006

Question:

I am from Barbados, although I now live in the United States. A common drug used to treat the sickle cell crisis in Barbados is Pethidine, but I didn`t see it listed in the article on treatments.

Is this drug used in the United States? If not, what is the equivalent that is approved for use?

Answer:

Pethidine is another name for Demerol or meperdine which is a narcotic (opioid) pain medicine very similar to morphine. It is not used as much in the US anymore because it can cause seizures as a side effect.
