Breast Feeding

Leaking

10/30/2006

Question:

I breast fed for four months. My son is now a year old. I stopped leaking shortly after I stopped breast feeding. Now after 6 months of I have started to leak again. Is this normal

Answer:

Nipple stimulation can resume some lactation in recently lactating breasts.

If there has been no nipple stimulation, or if this persists despite cessation of all nipple stimulation, this is called galactorrhea.

Persistent or increasing galactorrhea should be brought to the attention of an endocrinologist to be sure your pituitary gland is normal.
