Osteoporosis

Is Taking Fosamax Better Than Protelos with Osseor?

11/13/2006

Question:

My wife, aged 60, has osteoporosis with a bone density reading of minus 3.7.

She has been advised the take either Fosomax once a week or Protelos/Osseor nightly.

Apart from disliking the taste of Osseor the need to wait two hours after eating is inconvenient when an early night`s unbroken sleep is needed.

She prefers taking the weekly Fosomax but has been given conflicting advice as to which medication would be more effective.

Your comments would be very much appreciated.

Answer:

To my knowledge there are no head to head trials comparing the fracture rate of the two drugs, so it would be very difficult to say that one drug would be better than the other.  Neither drug will prevent all fractures.  She should get benefit either way if the medication is taken correctly and calcium and vitamin D are adequate.
