Anxiety and Stress Disorders (Children)

Symptoms of Anxiety

11/27/2006

Question:

Please could you help me. My ten year old neice is pulling her eyelashes out, wetting the bed, is scared of being alone and won`t sleep by herself, she has also lost a significant amount of weight. I have suggested to her parents that she be brought to her Dr, is this the right course of action, what could be wrong with her?

Answer:

There are many problems that you touch upon in your brief description, the most serious is her weight loss.  Anxiety seems to be at the core of most of the other problems and is not uncommon for children this age.  She could be depressed, or she could be suffering from an anxiety disorder. I would agree that a serious discussion with her doctor is a good place to start.
