Child body odor

02/05/2007 10:36AM

Question:

I have a 5 year old girl who developes body odor of an adult when she has active play. She has been tested for thyroid through blood samples and no problems were detected. She uses antibacterial soap and the odor still comes. Is this something serious and what could be the cause?

Answer:

Thank you for your question regarding body odor in a five year old child.  I am glad you have already sought some care form your provider.  Please use this information to help you ask better questions of your provider.  Body odor in itself does not always signify a problem.  It can however be a sign of puberty coming too early.

You stated the child was tested for thyroid problems, but made no mention of other hormone tests.  Please ensure that your child has been examined for other signs of early puberty such as underarm hair, pubic hair breast development or enlargement of the clitoris.  If no problems are seen than a deodorant can be used for the odor on young children without concern.
