PMDD and Sarafem/Prozac01/16/2007 |
I think I have PMDD and have been researching the medication called Sarafem. Does Sarafem act like the birth control as far as reducing the menstral bleeding and the amount of days a woman is on her cycle?
Sarafem is actually fluoxetine, which is also sold under the name, Prozac. This is an anti-depressant, anti-anxiety medication in the class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It is also effective in treating the emotional aspects of PMDD. It is not a hormone, so it has little to no effect on menstrual bleeding or length of the menses.
