Anesthesia

Pain after aortic aneurysm

02/28/2007

Question:

I had an abdominal aortic aneurysm 3 weeks ago and had to under go emergency surgery. I am walking and exercising to a sensible extent. It seems that my entire body is sore. Is this usual after this type of surgery?

Answer:

You are likely describing myalgia or muscle soreness. This may be a result of the anesthetic used but that usually only lasts a few days. Sometimes, a reaction to transfused blood may cause soreness, however other organs (such as the kidney) are also affected. Another possibly is deconditioning from inactivity during surgery/ICU/hospital stay and now that you are back exercising you are are feeling sore. This pain should resolve spontaneously and soon. If it persists, you should follow up with your physician.
