Doxycycline and breastfeeding
my wife is breastfeeding and is worried about taking doxycycline
Any medication that you take during breastfeeding has the potential to cross into breastmilk. It is extremely important to let your health care provider know that you are breastfeeding when any medication is prescribed.
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that is listed as L3 or moderately safe during lactation. This means that there are no controlled studies in breastfeeding women; however the risk of untoward effects a breastfed infant is possible. Your wife should discuss her breastfeeding with the health care provider prescribing the medication, AND the health care provider of the breastfed baby. The advantage and disadvantages of the particular plan of care then be discussed and decided upon by all involved.
