Urinary Tract Cancers

Renal Cancer

Is it possible that an abdominal CT scan and renal lasix scan can locate bilateral kidney stones and hydronephrosis but miss a cancerous renal lesion even if small retroperineal nodes are mentioned in the CT report? Is it also possible that a doctor can perform a cystoscope and utereoscope and miss it as well?

Thank you.

Yes and yes. A lot depends on the size of the renal mass. If it is central and or less than 2 cm it may get missed. It also depends on the quality of the CT scan. Older CT machines may miss cancers that newer machines pick up. They simply “see better”.

A cystoscope and ureteroscope can miss renal cell cancers. They are a long ways away from the kidney when those procedures are done.
