Menopause

Can I be perimenopausal?

04/26/2007

Question:

I would like to know if i am going through perimenopause? I am constantly tired, I am almost 30 yrs old, sometimes I have night sweats when I wake up my shirt is wet, I wake up to go to the bathroom sometimes 2x`s a night. I just had a baby 6 months ago, and I haven`t felt right since. dizzy spells, loss of appetite, weight loss, and like I said before I am tired ALOT!!! I do experience vaginal dryness, and itching sometimes. Should I get a hormonal test done or what? I am really sick of being tired all the time! Oh I should also say that my doc put me on zoloft 25 mg. Please help!!!

Answer:

Most mothers are tired during the first year after childbirth.  If your periods have not returned, it would be expected that you would be having some vaginal dryness.  A lubricant or vaginal moisturizer might help.  Weight loss is more concerning.  Weight loss and hot flashes could signal a thyroid problem.  Be sure your thyroid is functioning normally.  It would also be good to know that you are not anemic.  Tests for both thyroid and anemia are simple blood tests.  If the Zoloft has not helped, please check back with your physician.
