Would Bicycling Affect Osteoporosis?06/18/2007 |
I am a 59 year-old woman with osteoporosis (taking Fosomax and Evista). My latest dexascan showed my spine to be at -2.8 and my hip to be -1.8. I would like to purchase a bicycle for exercise and entertainment purposes but am concerned about the effect a fall off a bike might have on my osteoporosis. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Exercise is very important to many aspects of health, including osteoporosis. No one can guarantee no injuries with any sport, so just be cautious. I would, however, encourage you to avoid extreme sports like sky-diving, jumping off ski lifts, etc. Also, avoid HEAVY lifting, bench pressing, and the like.
