What are the likely diseases associated to obesity, for instance if a married female of 20 years is overweight by 20 kilograms?
For an adult who is overweight, there are a number of complications related to excess weight. These include:
- hypertension
- cardiovascular disease
- type 2 diabetes - insulin resistance where the body cells are less sensitive to insulin
- gall bladder disease
- liver problems such as fatty liver
- obstructive sleep apnea
- abnormal lipid profiles such as high cholesterol
- hormonal problems in women e.g., polycystic ovary disease
- and certain cancers.
Some other conditions like asthma are also seen more often in overweight individuals. The likelihood you will have any of these conditions can be affected by other factors like how long you have been overweight, your family history, your ethnicity, your gender.
