Can I breastfeed after a hysterectomy?05/24/2007 |
I was wondering if it is possible to have milk after a hysterectomy?
Yes, it is possible to breastfeed and to make milk after a hysterectomy, especially if preceded by a pregnancy. The milk-making hormones are secreted by the pituitary gland which is in the brain.
The uterus is not necessary for breastfeeding, and even if the ovaries are removed after the pregnancy, they do not usually become active again until after lactation has ceased or almost ceased.
