Breast Cancer

Stereotactic mammotome biopsy

07/11/2007

Question:

i was called back for this test but because of the fact that i would have to lie on my stomach for 30 to 45 minutes i chose to go to a surgeon.they said i had 3 clusters all attached. i hope its nothing serious but any way i just want them removed they dont belong there.

Answer:

I generally do recommend that calcifications be biopsied stereotactically.  There is much less scarring and often these are benign and do not require surgery.  If cancer is diagnosed, then one operation can be performed.  If they are excised surgically, then a second operation will be required if cancer is diagnosed.
