Breast Cancer

Itchy areola with discharge

08/13/2007

Question:

I recently weaned my 5th child, so i have nursed for a total approximately 5 years. And I have been told that nursing reduces the risk of breast cancer. I have had an itchy patch on my left areola next to my nipple that regularly has a discharge with it. The discharge is from the crease between the nipple and the areola if that makes sense, NOT the nipple itself. Is this something to worry about?

Answer:

I suggest you call your physician to have this evaluated. It may be as simple as a crack in the skin, however, without actually visualizing it, I cannot give you an opinion. If there is any question, you should see a breast specialist.
