Myasthenia Gravis

Antibiotic for infection

08/17/2007

Question:

My parent has myasthenia gravis she has an infection along with injuries from a fall. Levaquin is the drug being used for the infection. Is this the best antibiotic?

Answer:

While I can’t tell you if the Levaquin is the best drug for the infection that your parent is being treated for, I can tell you that Levaquin (levofloxacin) is a drug that we exercise some caution with in myasthenics. Levofloxacin is in the same family of drugs as ciprofloxacin, a drug that has been reported to cause exacerbations of myasthenic symptoms. It doesn’t happen to everyone, but is is important to recognize the reaction to the drug if it does happen. You should discuss this drug with your parent's physician.
