Developing allergies late in life

08/28/2007 01:02PM

Question:

Is it possible for someone who has eaten crab all of their lives at the age of 61 all of a sudden be allergic to it now?

Answer:

Yes, certainly this is possible. However, history with confirmatory skin and/or serologic testing is necessary to determine if you are "sensitized" to shellfish.  In order to rule an "allergic" vs. an "intolerant" reaction, you should be seen and tested by a board certified internal medicine trained allergist to determine if you are indeed allergic to shellfish.
