Breast Cancer

Areola

08/20/2007

Question:

I am a 47 year old woman. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about 5 years ago and survived with all the treatments. However, I had my yearly mammogram and I was told there is a nodule behind the areola. What does this mean and is it a sign of breast cancer?

Answer:

There is nothing to suggest that this is definitely breast cancer, however, given your history and the finding of a new nodule, a biopsy should be performed. Speak to your primary care physician about a referral to a breast specialist, or return to the surgeon who took care of you 5 years ago. Good luck.
