Arthritis and Rheumatism

Lower back pain and pain in right leg

10/15/2007

Question:

I have arthritis of the back and this morning I woke up with severe pain in my right side of lower back and right leg. Is this serious and what can do to be comfortable?

Answer:

The seriousness of the problem depends on what is exactly causing your symptoms.  Pain in the lower back with pain traveling into the leg may be due to several different causes.  It may be due to herniated disk causing pinched nerve, muscle strain causing pinched nerve, osteoarthritis causing pinched nerve, or osteoarthritis itself.  If pain persists for longer than a week or if there is any weakness in the legs, bladder/bowel incontinence, then medical attention should be sought.
