Why not liver transplant-metastasized cancers10/22/2007 |
Why is a person with colon cancer metastasized to the liver not eligible for a liver transplant, especially if there is no lymph node involvement? Resection of the liver is not possible due to the scatter of the cancer on the liver.
Because the failure rate (metastasis outside the liver), is still very high, despite having the disease only in the liver. Also, after liver transplantation the immune system is supressed which will increase the rate of cancer recurrence.
