Should I be Concerned About an Itchy Nipple?11/15/2007 |
One of my nipples has red and raised itchy patch on it. I have tried everything from lotions, to anitbiotic cream, to anti itching cortisone creams. Nothing helps. Should I be concerned?
What you describe could represent any of a number of benign (non-cancerous) skin conditions. Rarely, however, an itchy, scaly nipple can signal a more serious problem, called Paget's disease of the nipple. This is a condition which can mean that there is a breast cancer somewhere in the breast. So although this is not too likely, I would recommend a good exam by a dermatologist or a breast surgeon, as either type of doctor can do a small biopsy of the scaly area if needed. This would determine if you have Paget's. And you should have mammograms, as well.
