Question:

How long does nicotine and cotinine stay in the body`s system (1 wk, 1 mo, 6 mo)? Also, can cotinine tests be purchased over-the-counter?

Answer:

A question very similar to yours has been previously answered, and you will find that information linked below.  I would add to that: the half-life of nicotine is 30-60 minutes.

Cotinine tests are available on the web (Google: "cotinine test"); however, I cannot attest to their accuracy.

I obviously can't be sure, but I wonder if you are asking because you'd like to duck on a test to be given by an insurance company or your employer while you keep smoking.  If that's the case, I've got a better idea.  Stop trying to fool them -- and yourself -- about your addiction.  Call 800 QUIT NOW (784-8669) and talk to your doctor.  You can do this.  They can help.
