Esophageal cancer12/07/2007 |
Both my father and grandfather died from esophageal cancer. They both smoked and drank hard liquor. I have never smoked and drink only wine and beer. Of course I grew up in the 60`s around second-hand smoke. Am I at risk for esophageal cancer as well?
Esophageal cancer is only rarely an inherited disease. The risk of esophageal cancer is higher in people with severe gastroesophageal reflux, in addition to smoking and alcohol. The best screening tool would be an esophagoscopy by your gastroenterologist.
