Bleeding and Clotting Disorders

ITP

01/07/2008

Question:

I discovered that my platelets count was low last March, and recently the doctor said that it may be ITP as they`ve run several tests and everything is normal. The doctor asked me if I have frequent ulcers, if I lose my hair easily, and if I get easily fatigued or short of breath. My answers to these questions are affirmative, but I never knew that it is due to thrombocytopenia? Or is it due to a weaker immune system? And can ITP be stress-induced?

Answer:

Your doctor asked these questions to determine if there are other illnesses that may be related to the change in platelet count. We know that in patients with a known history of ITP, certain things will make it worse, but we do not know the role of stress.
