Could RA Cause Stinging Pain in the Left Hand?

01/14/2008

Question:

The past week every time I touch my little finger on my left hand I get shooting pins and needles go up my finger. It is making it hard to write and type. The past three months my RA has gotten worse too. Can RA effect the nerves in my hand?

Answer:

RA can affect the nerves in the hands if inflammation at the wrist is pushing on the nerve. Your symptoms are suggestive of either ulnar neuropathy or cervical radiculopathy. Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) tests of the left arm would help clarify the diagnosis.
