Can RA Cause Osteoarthritis at an Early Age?

01/07/2008

Question:

I have RA and when I got an X-Ray of my feet it showed osteoarthritis. I am 34 years old. Can RA cause or help bring on osteoarthritis at an early age?

Answer:

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) activity in a joint may predispose that joint to degenerative changes found in osteoarthritis (OA). RA can damage the integrity of the joint's cartilage or bone around the joint. This can then lead to early degenerative changes.
