Breast Cancer

Should I go for blood test?

01/30/2008

Question:

I had breast cancer about 3 years ago, and since then, I have gone for annual mammograms and the routine medical check ups. However, someone told me I should go for a blood test for cancer markers. Is it necessary?

Answer:

Checking tumor markers in early breast cancer for detection of recurrence is absolutely not recommended by the American Society of Clinical Oncologist expert panel. So there is no need to check your blood for markers.
