Bruising on thighs with no obvious trauma

Question:

I recently had bruising occur at the same time on both my legs on the outer thigh. I do not remember any trauma that could have caused it, and the skin underneath the bruising feels a little lumpy. Earlier that day I had extreme itchiness on the spots where the bruising occured, so I was scratching that area fairly hard. Could this be the cause of the bruising?

Answer:

Problems with weakness in the valves of the veins can cause itching and a bruised appearance. I would suggest you ask your primary care physician to have you undergo a venous reflux ultrasound in a nearby vascular lab for assessment. Something as simple as compression or support stockings may be all you need. Good luck!
