Buspar and Effexor

02/19/2008

Question:

my doctor has me on 75 mg of Effexor and 10mg of Buspar, twice daily. Is this combination of medicine okay?

I was diagnosed with panic disorder and GAD.

Answer:

This is not an uncommon combination for these disorders.  In fact buspar augmentation of antidepressants in depression has been studied in STAR-D*, the largest NIMH study on the topic. Doses of both agents can continue to be adjusted based on response.
