Bruised or cracked ribs

03/14/2008

Question:

I was just wondering how long does the pain last for a bruised or cracked rib last. I fell off my Bicycle and have been trouble sleeping with the pain on my side. Is there anything non prescription to take for the pain.

Answer:

Many injuries to the rib or thorax area can be very painful and long-lasting. It is important to have the injury evaluated by a health care professional to rule out fractures or more serious abdominal injuries. Your family physician can determine the extent of your injury and prescribe an appropriate medication. Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be helpful in reducing pain in these situations once the extent of your injury has been determined.
