Ruptured ovarian cyst

03/15/2008

Question:

What causes an ovarian cyst to rupture & what types of infections can be caused by a ruptured ovarian cyst?

Answer:

An ovarian cyst is the result of the ovary's normal function of ovulating. Once a cyst gets tense enough as it grows, it can rupture. The fluid can be very irritating to the pelvic cavity and cause pain. It can't cause an infection since the fluid is sterile.
