Digestive Disorders

Large Liver Cysts

04/10/2008

Question:

I just had an ultrasound to check the size of my benigh liver cysts. It is over 8cm in size. I am 55 years old and in relative good health. The only option discussed has been to drain the cysts. Are there other options and and what procedure can be done that will ensure the cysts will not return.

Answer:

Most patients with simple cysts of the liver are not symptomatic and require no treatment. In those that are definitely symptomatic from the cyst, treatment is warranted.

Percutaneous cyst aspiration is a procedure that can be done by radiology, but does have a high rate of recurrence. Another option includes laparoscopic cyst "unroofing" or excising a portion of the cyst wall. This procedure can be done with minimal hospital stay and superior cosmetic outcomes and minimal cyst recurrence rates.
