Osteoporosis and braces
I am 60 years old and have been diagnosed with osteoporosis. I took Fosamax for approximately 2 to 3 years, but after learning about the osteonecrosis side effect, four years ago, I stopped the Fosamax.
I now take calcium and vitamin D supplements and I have had no fractures. Because of tooth pain from very crowded teeth which seem to be getting worse, I am considering braces.
Would the fact that I do have osteoporosis be a contraindication for braces? I am aware that some bone loss is typical when teeth are moved and I do not want to trade one problem for another.
You should see an orthodontist who has experience in treating patients with osteoporosis. See the American Association of Orthodontics web site for a list of practitioners in your area.
