Question:

Please inform about new medication which is coming to treat this terrible conditions. How soon perfinidone will come, or something else. Give some update or promise. Thanks

Answer:

The pirfenidone study will not be completed until late summer. If the drug is found to be effective, then the next step will be an application to the FDA. A large study of pirfenidone in Japan was completed and the results of that study will be presented in late May at the American Thoracic Society meeting but the preliminary results were that the drug was effective. It is possible that pirfenidone will be available in Japan and some other countries before it becomes available in the United States. There are other clinical trials for new treatments for IPF but so far, there are no major breakthroughs.
