Life expectancy05/15/2008 |
I have PAH. I know it depend on many factros but once diagnosed how long does the average person live? How rare is PAH?
This is a difficult question to answer. The life expectancy for patients with PAH depends on many factors including how sick the patient is at the time of the diagnosis, age, findings on echocardiography and heart catheterization, as well as other factors. In the era before treatment was available, patients lived only a few years on average from the time of diagnosis. However, there is currently a wide variation in survival based on the above factors as well as the fact that we have medications and lung transplantation to offer patients. Some patients live much longer periods of time and unfortunately, some live for a much shorter time.
