Alcohol as a means of lowering glucose levels05/20/2008 |
If you forget to take insulin after a big lunch and you are a type 1 diabetic, and come to realize your blood glucose level is 22mmol/l. What would the introduction of alcohol do at this point can it help lower blood glucose levels.
The impact of alcohol at that time is somewhat unpredictable although one of its effects would likely to be to lower the blood glucose. It would make far more sense to take some but a reduced dose of insulin. You would have a hard time convincing me that alcohol is an appropriate means to use to control blood glucose.
