Dental Anesthesia

Anesthesia okay in early pregnancy

06/02/2008

Question:

I had my wisdom teeth removed and then a few days later found out I was pregnant. I`m wondering what effect the Anesthesia and painkillers I was given may have had on the baby.

Answer:

Thank you for your question. If you just had local anesthesia, this is probably not an issue although the dose may have been high if all four wisdom teeth were removed. If you had IV sedation, like at an oral surgeon's office or a dentist that does this, then some of the drugs that may have been used can have adverse effects on the developing fetus.

I suggest you contact your dentist to find out what medications, [including local anesthetic type(s)], and how much, were given and discuss this with your OB/GYN.
