Muscle knot lower scapula where muscle insert

07/07/2008

Question:

How do I alleviate a regular knot beneath my scapula which recurs frequently? i had a massage and it seems worse.

Answer:

Spasm of muscle in this area is common and it is a frequent source of pain and irritation for patients.  Frequent gentle stretching of the muscle, application of ice or heat or ice followed by heat and anti-inflammatory medications are all reasonable first options.  Massage usually does help this problem, but at times can irritate the muscle.  When these conservative measures don't help, consider seeing a physician who can do a trigger point injection in this area.  Often this will break the spasm/pain cycle.
