Missed period

06/30/2008

Question:

so i went off birth control and got my period and now im a week and a half late from getting my last period. I havent had sex, but i came close... can going off birth control mess up my period? Or should i be worried?

Answer:

If you are concerned about possible pregnancy you should have a pregnancy test done. Although uncommon, if semen comes close to the vagina, sperm may find there way into the woman's body.

Most women have very regular menstrual cycles while taking cyclic oral contraceptives. If your cycles were irregular before being on the oral contraceptives, they will most likely return to being irregular off the pill. Even in a woman who has regular cycles before using oral contraceptive, it may take a few months to resume having regular cycles when she discontinues pills. If this persists 3 months after discontinuing the pill, you should see a health care provider.
