Better Prostate Cancer Treatment07/15/2008 |
Which prostate cancer treatment has less complications, side effects, recovery time, etc. - IMRT or Brachyteraphy? This is an early stage cancer presently being treated with hormones until healing from thoracotomy. Age of the patient is 55. Thank you.
There is no clear answer regarding which option has less complications, side effects, recovery time, etc. The two options you ask about have different side effects, one doesn't necessarily have more or less. Brachytherapy tends to have more urinary symptoms and IMRT tends to have more rectal irritation. Certainly a discussion with your urologist and radiation oncologist can cover all of the specifics and differences between the two. There are also some newer options of radiation that our center has begun offering, cyberknife robotic radiosurgery, which also may be a reasonable radiation option to consider as well.
