Partially torn ACL

07/25/2008

Question:

What is the best treatment for a partially torn ACL for someone who plays competitive soccer and is a personal trainer? Would surgery be the best, or non surgical rehab? We have had way too many different opinions and dont know what to do!

Answer:

The reason that you have had different opinions is because there is not agreement on the best course of action regarding these types of injuries.  One school of thought is that physical therapy and strengthening should be used and return to activity.  If further injury occurs, then surgery is undertaken, but if activity is not limited then surgery can be averted.  The other school of thought is that surgery will correct the partial tear immediately; however, this assures you that surgery will occur with the possible complications of surgery.  I would recommend that you choose the surgeon with whom you are most comfortable and have established the best relationship and work with that physician to determine your course of action.  Since you have gotten a second opinion already, the ball is now in your court to decide how you want to proceed.
