Age to start lifting weights07/25/2008 |
what is the right age to start lifting weights for a kid
It is generally thought that routine play and activity is most appropriate for children who are pre-pubertal. Actual weight lifting should probably not begin until puberty has begun, with signs of secondary sexual characteristics. This means pubic and axillary hair in males with increase in growth/height velocity and deepening of the voice. For girls, it is the onset of menses and breast development. A strength program should be established with your physician to determine the amount of weights and number of repetitions with an emphasis on more repetitions and less weight rather than few repetitions with large amounts of weight in order to avoid injury.
