Emphysema and pneumonia07/23/2008 |
My dad has been on hospital for several weeks due to complications from bowel resection. last week he asperated has been on and off ventilator. now he has pnemonia. he also has emphysema which is complicationg the recovery. We were told antibiotics are not being distributed to all areas of the lungs because of emphysema. Is there any other way to treat the infection?
While emphysema may complicate the pneumonia, if he is receiving the proper antibiotics they should still be effective. Receiving adequate nutritional support and facilitating secretion removal from the lungs (coughing, suctioning) may help treat the pneumonia as well.
