Allergies

Allergic to Synthroid and generic brands

10/20/2008

Question:

I am considering thyroid surgery because my thyroid gland is getting too big (multi-nodular goiter) and I feel like choking but I am allergic to Synthroid (closing of the throat so I cannot swallow).

What should I do? I need to take Synthroid for life after thyroidectomy.

Answer:

There are substitutes for Synthroid. If they are not tolerated, it may be possible to do a graded challenge (a form of desensitization). You should consult an allergist.
