Digestive Disorders

Elevated amylase levels

11/05/2008

Question:

For over 2 years I have had an elevated amylase level with stomach distention. When it is real bad, I cannot pass gas, have a bowel movement or burp. I have even had to go to the emergency department a few times. I have had every test done (even invasive ones) and no one can give me diagnosis. Please help me. I look and feel like I`m pregnant because my belly is so distended and it`s putting a lot of pressure on my belly and lungs.

Answer:

Elevated amylase is a very non-specific test. Of course, you probably know that amylase is from pancrease and as you state you have had every test, so I am sure that has been looked into. Gas/bloating can be sign of gallbladder dysfunction. That is the only thing that comes to mind at this point.
