Emphysema and fungal pneumonia11/04/2008 |
My father has emphysema. Last spring, he was hospitalized with mild pneumonia which quickly worsened, and then we were told he had fungal pneumonia as well as bacterial. We moved him to a larger facility and it took about a month for him to recover enough to come home. Nothing was ever mentioned about the fungal pneumonia (aspergillosis) again. He was ok for several months, but seems to be getting sick again. Could it be that this fungus was never eradicated? He stopped the antifungals when he left the hospital.
Sometimes a fungal pneumonia like aspergillosis can become chronic in COPD patients. You could discuss the possibility of a chronic infection with your doctor.
